Individual Identity Series
The Individual Identity Series is a triptych portrait series that pursues the unique individuality of each of my subject’s (my family members) identity through the eyes of the viewer, while only being able to see three sections of the subject’s face, the left eye, chin, and right section of the subject's forehead.
The idea behind this project is to capture my family member’s unique individual identity, however it is up to the audience to give meaning to the individuality and identity in regards to my subjects. The triptych portrait is displayed with three sections of the subject’s face showcased, first the viewer would need to construct the image using their imagination, then once assembled the viewer would instinctively try to recognize who that subject is and what the subject represents to them. During that process a unique and individual identity is created. For Instance Thomas Martin Ronald Groves would represent a father to me, a husband to my mother, a professor to his students, and to a stranger he could represent an uncle who looks similar and in all of these representations a unique individual identity is created by each viewer depicting their version of my father.
The series challenges the viewer to assemble the portrait themselves and in that process creating their own personal individual identity of what that person means and/or represents to the viewer.
